INTRODUCTION To WRITING TEST

IELTS Academic Writing is a one hour test which consists of two tasks. Task one and Task two.

In Task one you are asked to write a 150 word report based on a chart, graph, table or diagram. Even though the word limit is 150 words, it refers to the minimum word limit, which means you should always write above this limit. Writing between 160 and 180 words is usually sufficient enough. You will not be penalized for writing more. But writing more may lead to over-consumption of time and language slips in the content. Remember you should use only 20 minutes for this task. Exceeding this limit may kill the time of task two.

In Task two you are given a topic to write a discursive essay. A discursive essay is an essay where you have to discuss, argue or give a solution to a problem. The topics are generally based on current issues related to politics, society, environment, technology etc. for this task are to allocate 40 minutes and you should write minimum 250 words. That means your essay should be within the word limit of 260-280.

The bar chart below shows Scotland’s exports to the rest of the UK and the rest of the world for the year 2014. Scotland’s Exports to the Rest of the UK and the Rest of the World – 2014

Answer:
This report concerns a bar chart, which compares Scotland’s exports in different areas of industry to the rest of the UK with its exports to the rest of the world in 2014.
It is evident that exports to the rest of the world were much more significant to the Scottish economy than those to the rest of the UK.
The bar chart shows that in 2014 Scotland exported more to the rest of the world than to the rest of the UK in all the industries mentioned with one exception. The Electrical & Instrument Engineering industry exports were £4 billion to the rest of the UK compared to £2.3 billion going to the rest of the world.
In other industry sectors, the difference in exports was most significant in the Business Services & Finance, Hotels & Restaurant Services Industry, with exports to the rest of the world worth £13.8 billion and exports to the UK worth only £1.7 billion. Other notable sectors were Wholesale & Retail with roughly £7 billion of difference between exports to ROW and the rest of the UK, Chemicals & Mineral Products and Other Manufacturing where the difference between exports to the rest of the world and those to the rest of the UK was approaching £5 billion.

Answer:

Social media today is extremely significant to a majority of the population, especially the younger generation. Many teenagers find it exceptionally convenient and necessary for communication and entertainment. However, not everyone is able to use social media responsibly, which gave rise to the idea of making it accessible to only those older than eighteen years of age.
Though there are negatives, such as cyber-bullying, or being too distracted by these modern media, there are issues surrounding most things in life. It is a choice to go onto a social media website, and many younger people are capable of managing accounts without any difficulties. It is not the government’s responsibility to monitor under eighteen-year olds; that is for the parents.
Statistics show that over eighty per cent of teens use a form of online social media. It allows them to chat online, easily stay in contact with friends and family across the world, and see updates on others’ lives (through text, photos or videos). Social media is a way to express thoughts or ideas and to stay in contact with the rest of the world.
To not permit one of the largest Internet-using demographics to use social media because a few people have problems with it is an irrational and an unfair restriction. Not only would profit be lost with fewer users, but controlling who creates accounts and monitoring proof of age would be difficult as well. I believe that laws should not make social media inaccessible to young people under eighteen; this would be unnecessary and absurd.

It so happens that most colleges and universities focus on students’ academic performance much more than their practical skills. Unfortunately, many companies reserve permanent job opportunities for experienced applicants because there is no need to invest much in their training. Lack of practical experience in new graduates puts them at a disadvantage as far as companies are concerned. The situation is made worse by the abundance of advanced technologies that can easily replace human labor. Robots and computers work more efficiently and with higher precision than humans. That shrinks the pool of available job placements even more, as companies only need to hire highly educated and experienced staff.

Fortunately, there is a number of solutions that can help inexperienced workers gain permanent employment. An obvious one is that universities could offer internships to their students, or arrange workshops in addition to classwork. This would help students to get training and experience in their respective fields. Also, the government could examine the demands of changing labor market and steer young people towards professions that will be popular in the coming years. Together with colleges and universities the government could create special awareness programs for graduates, providing them with an overview of various job offers and their benefits. This way students would be able to choose the right jobs for themselves.

To sum up, lack of demand in the labour market and insufficient experience are two major reasons why many young people have trouble finding a permanent position. Helping them gain hands-on experience as part of their studies and educating them about career options early on is key to improving the employment outcome for them.
